Linda's Story
I was born in 1951 in the East End of London and grew up in Peckham. I’ve always enjoyed being around people and had a busy working life in fashion PR, the Civil Service, and later in legal services. I met my husband Melvyn at a dance in the West End and we married in 1973. We had two sons and shared a full and happy life together.
Life changed when I lost Melvyn in 2018, which broke my heart. In 2019 I was diagnosed with myeloma and renal failure and now attend hospital for dialysis three times a week. Alongside illness and grief came a deep sense of loneliness that I was not prepared for.
This is why Circle of Friends means so much to me. On the days when I am not at hospital, it is so important to have something to look forward to, something positive in my week. From the moment I joined I felt welcomed and understood. Some of the group members have also experienced the loss of loved ones, which makes such a difference. I don’t have to explain how I feel, they just know.
When I met a friend in hospital, I invited her to come along to Circle of Friends with me. She joined the group and is now part of our gang! Seeing her find the same comfort, understanding and support that I did has meant a great deal to me. Circle of Friends is not just helping me, it’s helping the people I care about as well.
Wendy and Di are always there for every one of us. They truly care, they notice when someone is struggling, and they make sure no one feels forgotten. Their kindness and understanding are a huge part of what makes the group so special.
We support one another, we laugh, and we enjoy spending time together. This group has helped me feel like myself again. I honestly don’t know how I would have coped without it. Circle of Friends is not just a social group to me, it is companionship, understanding, and comfort when life feels incredibly hard.
